The Delph Donkey was the nickname of the train that ran on the Delph to Oldham line for over a hundred years until sadly closing in 1955.
It is assumed the nickname came from the fact that the first trains were horsedrawn back in the 1850s though this is an area for debate.
"Saddleworth was well served by rail until the 1930s. We could get a suitable connection on the Delph Donkey to Clegg Street Station and without changing platforms mount on a train from Rochdale known as "John Bright's train"( a politician who travelled to London every Monday) and go direct to Euston as the train was attached to the Manchester to London express at Stockport"
From "The Saddleworth Story" circa 1963
