Greenfield Cricket Club has been at the heart of the village for well over 100 years. Originally known as Bentfield Cricket Club after the mill that loomed over the ground for many years there is still no finer place in Saddleworth to watch cricket on a sunny summer afternoon

This is circa 1902!
Ode to Greenfield CC
Down at Grenfilt cricket field
They'd sit just havin' fun
Drinkin' halves o' Gartsides bitter
And an occasional drop o' rum
"Shap thi barra Scanlan
Th'owd lads used to say
We've only 40 overs
We havent got all day!"
It's many many years ago
I can't remember when
Bill Bradbury sittin' on that form
Right next to Jerry Ken
These guys were made in Saddleworth
From good old Yorkshire grit
It was lovely watchin' cricket
And listenin' to their wit
Matt Sale played cricket with mi dad
But then looked after t' bar
They'd catch a bus to Flowery
When no one had a car
Three Jacks I remember
Ellis Scanlan Scholes
All three very different
All with different roles
Jack Scholes he captained t'seconds
And were always good to me
I got some runs v Delph one day
An' he gimme fifty p.
Jack Scanlan weren't the quickest
He used to tek some ribbin'
From them fellas on the sideline
Who I guess were only kiddin'
Timbers he kept wicket
He always looked so good
Til once he stopped one wi' his nose
Well you shoulda seen the blood!
I remember one 3rd team game
Wally then Heapers gettin caught
We were 83 all out that day
An we'd been 79 for nought!
Even Norman looked unhappy
A sight you'd rarely see
But we only needed 85
8 got ducks plus me!
So think back every now n then
To those happy balmy days
They made the club the way it is
In oh so many ways.
